For students of any age, it is never too early to start thinking about and working on an engineering career. Engineering requires a love and aptitude for science and math. To get a taste of engineering and engineering related activities, explore extra curricular programs through your school such as MATHCOUNTS, IMSA Fusion, WYSE, JETS, Robotics Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Engineer in the Classroom; local camps or classes through community colleges, YMCA or other civic organizations. Take mathematics and science classes available to at your school to get a leg up once in college. Understand that studying engineering in college is challenging. If these activities excite you, then you too may be a future PE! |

Your College Search
While it is possible to become a licensed PE through other routes, the shortest path includes a bachelor of science in engineering degree from an ABET Accredited Engineering Program. ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization that accredits college and university programs in the disciplines of applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology at the associate, bachelor, and master degree levels. When conducting a college search, look for an engineering school that has an ABET Accredited Engineering Program that meets your interests. Note: Engineering Technology and Engineering are very different in the eyes of licensing bodies. To become a PE, you want to find a program that is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
