If you are a student of any age, it is never too early to start thinking about and working on your engineering career. Engineering requires a love and aptitude for science and math. To get a taste of engineering and engineering related activities, explore extra curricular programs through your school such as MATHCOUNTS, IMSA Fusion, WYSE, JETS, Robotics Club, Mu Alpha Theta, Engineer in the Classroom; local camps or classes through community colleges, YMCA or other civic organizations. Take mathematics and science classes available to you at your school to get a leg up once you get to college. Understand that studying engineering in college is challenging. If these activities excite you, then you too may be a future PE! |

Your College Search
While it is possible to become a licensed PE through other routes, the shortest path includes a bachelor of science in engineering degree from an ABET Accredited Engineering Program. ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization that accredits college and university programs in the disciplines of applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology at the associate, bachelor, and master degree levels. When conducting your college search, you want to look for an engineering school that has an ABET Accredited Engineering Program that meets your interests. Note: Engineering Technology and Engineering are very different in the eyes of licensing bodies. To become a PE, you want to find a program that is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. Through ABET's online program search, you can also see how long the program has been accredited. |
